Domain Change on a Client

  1. Make note of your current %USERPROFILE%
  2. Bring up the System Properties either from Properties on My Computer or from System in Control Panel
  3. Click the Computer Name tab
  4. Click Change…
  5. Click More…
  6. Ensure Primary DNS suffix of this computer is correct
  7. Ensure Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes is unchecked
  8. Click OK
  9. Enter the new domain name in the Member of group under the Domain textbox
  10. Click OK to ack “Welcome to the new.domain.com domain” popup window.
  11. Enter your new.domain.com id and password
  12. Click OK
  13. Click OK to the “Reboot Required” message box
  14. Click OK
  15. Click Yes to reboot
  16. Once rebooted login with your new.domain.com id and password.
  17. Logoff
  18. Login as Administrator on your Computer
  19. Right click on my computer, select ‘manage’
  20. select “Local Users and Groups”, then “Groups” and right click on Adminstrators (and choose Add to Group..)
  21. Enter your user name, check name, OK
  22. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings in Explorer
  23. Bring up the folder properties of your old %USERPROFILE% Noted in the first step
  24. Click on the Security tab
  25. Click on Add…
  26. Type in your new.domain.com id and Click Check Names
  27. Enter your new.domain.com id and password
  28. Click OK
  29. Click OK
  30. Click Full Control
  31. Click Advanced
  32. Make sure Replace permission entries on all child objects is checked
  33. Click OK
  34. Run regedit
  35. Click on HKEY_USERS
  36. Select Load Hive… from the File menu
  37. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings in Explorer
  38. Click on your old %USERPROFILE%
  39. Enter NTUSER.DAT
  40. Click Open
  41. Enter an easy to remember Key Name like disco
  42. Expand HKEY_USERS !TreeNode
  43. Right click on disco key and select permissions
  44. Click Add…
  45. Type in your new.domain.com id and Click Check Names
  46. Enter your new.domain.com id and password
  47. Click OK
  48. Click OK
  49. Click Full Control
  50. Click OK
  51. Click on disco key
  52. Select Unload Hive… from the File menu
  53. Click Yes
  54. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\!CurrentVersion\!ProfileList and expand that node
  55. Find your new %USERPROFILE% by looking at the !ProfileImagePath key (it may end in something like .NEWDOMAIN)
  56. Double click the !ProfileImagePath found above and change it to end in your current %USERPROFILE%
  57. Find !ProfileImagePath with old %USERPROFILE% key and dbl click and change it to append a .old
  58. Exit regedit
  59. Open explorer and navigate to the folder one above %USERPROFILE% (typically C:\Document and Settings), rename any folders that end in NEWDOMAIN domain to OLDDOMAIN (must differ from reg key setting above)
  60. Logoff
  61. Login using your new.domain.com id and password
